Let’s talk about plastic cards. We’ve been working with iTunes a lot more lately, and as a result we’ve been doing a lot of research in the field of bioplastics. All of the cards we print for them are in some form or fashion environmentally friendly. My first thought, was how biodegradle can plastic be, it’s still plastic. It turns out there has been a lot of progress when it comes to creating eco friendly substrates for download cards. Researchers have found some alternatives to conventional petroleum-based plastic in plants. The main one being corn based plastics, made from fermented plant starches. These biodegrade within 3 months and have less impact on the ol’ carbon footprint. The end result is carbon dioxide and water.
Unfortunately, like any other new to the market eco-friendly option, the cost is higher than the old alternative. The cost to manufacture bioplastics is higher than the cost to create brand new petro-based ones, so we don’t see them as often as we’d like to. Maybe the tides will turn when plastic manufacturers are able to hire more employees to take on the extra labor involved with creating these materials. The costs may level out with the market and bioplastics will be the wave of the future. For now, we’ll keep doing our part to give you the best (and most eco-friendly) products we can offer!
